Project 366 #174: 220612 A Night On The Tiles

Flickr를 통해:
Amongst doing other things tonight (like the laundry - exciting!) I lashed the Windows 8 preview release onto a spare computer. This was as much to see if it worked as anything else.

It does, and it's a bit odd. The good news is that the performance is alright, even on a modest machine. That's encouraging.

What's weird is what they've done to it!

It looks like Microsoft, having failed to woo smart phone users in great numbers, are trying a back door approach and bolting Windows Mobile on to Windows 7.

That really seems to be what Windows 8 is. Take Windows 7 and replace the start menu with Windows Mobile.

It's unusual, and I'm not good with change so I'm trying not to reach too hasty a judgement, but I can't help not liking it already.

It's very 'touch' centric, and Microsoft have made no secret of that, but the reality is that the overwhelming majority of computers that it will be installed on won't support touch.

I hate touch screens. I've always hated touch screens. I wonder if it's subconscious throwbacks to our first family computer - a ZX81 with horrible touch-sensitive keys. I don't like point of sale kiosks. I don't like tablets. I don't even like trackpads on laptops - one of the reasons I avoid using them.

The fact is that I'm going to have to get over myself and embrace 'touch', even though to me it just doesn't work very well.

Windows 8 uses lots of 'apps' and 'tiles' within the start menu, and if you want to you can stay within the Metro UI. The irony to me is that Metro effectively gets rid of windows and pointers - the very bedrock of the Windows operating environment (the clue is in the name you see).

Anyway, Windows 8 will be OK. You can get rid of the 'apps' and pin your applications to the start page. It means that the start menu is a bit more in your face and that it will take a couple of extra clicks to actually do anything meaningful, but it won't be the end of society as we know it.

Still, that's only first impressions. ;)
